3. Eco-Film Recycling Initiative
In 2024, we
launched the Eco-Film Recycling Initiative as a pilot program to promote
environmental sustainability within the film industry. This initiative focused
on collecting recyclables from film sets and advocating for greener production
practices. A key goal of the program is to provide unemployed individuals with
opportunities to volunteer, gaining exposure to the film industry while
contributing to environmental conservation.
The Eco-Film
Initiative collected an impressive volume of recyclables from five shoots of
four production houses, including Dare Content Studios, Man Bites Dog,
Production Et Al, and The Star Film Company. These efforts were made possible
through the shoots managed by Chad and Douglas Machogo, whose roles as unit
managers were instrumental in facilitating the collection process. These
efforts showcased the potential for driving environmental sustainability within
the film industry.
The initiative
gathered 187 bursts of energy from cans, 523 moments of warmth from coffee
cups, and 642 waves of hydration from water bottles, demonstrating the
environmental impact of even a small-scale pilot program. As we step into 2025,
we dream bigger. By collaborating with the Commercial Producers Association of
South Africa (CPA SA), we aim to extend this initiative across more productions
and shoots., amplifying the initiative’s impact.
Additionally, we
aim to establish partnerships with catering companies and unit managers to
further integrate sustainable practices across productions. Through these
collaborations, we believe the Eco-Film Initiative can significantly contribute
to reducing the industry’s environmental footprint while providing meaningful
opportunities for communities to get involved
We have collected an impressive 1.3k
recyclables, driving environmental sustainability within the film industry.
